Es decir, que una descarga de rayo puede considerarse como una fuente casi ideal de corriente. Si una carga independiente activa una corriente el\u00e9ctrica que fluye a trav\u00e9s de elementos conductores, la ca\u00edda de tensi\u00f3n se determina sobre la base de la amplitud de corriente y la impedancia de los elementos conductores por los que \u00e9sta fluye. En el caso m\u00e1s sencillo esta relaci\u00f3n puede describirse aplicando la Ley de Ohm:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.electropol.com.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/FormulaU.png\" alt=\"FormulaU\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Si una corriente penetra por un solo punto de una superficie conductora homog\u00e9nea, se produce entonces la conocida \u00e1rea de gradiente de potencial. Este efecto aparece tambi\u00e9n en el caso de una descarga de rayo sobre una zona de terreno homog\u00e9nea (Ver Figura).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.electropol.com.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DistrbucionDelPotencial.png\" alt=\"DistrbucionDelPotencial\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Si en el \u00e1rea del gradiente de potencial se encuentran seres vivos (personas o animales) se origina una tensi\u00f3n de paso que tiene como consecuencia una peligrosa circulaci\u00f3n de corriente a trav\u00e9s del cuerpo (Ver Figura). Cuanto m\u00e1s elevada sea la conductividad del terreno tanto m\u00e1s plana ser\u00e1 el \u00e1rea de gradiente de potencial. Con ello se reduce equivalentemente el riesgo de tensiones de paso peligrosas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.electropol.com.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/MuerteDeAnimales.png\" alt=\"MuerteDeAnimales\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cuando un rayo descarga sobre un edificio equipado con un sistema de protecci\u00f3n contra el rayo, la corriente de rayo que fluye por la instalaci\u00f3n de toma de tierra del edificio, da lugar a una ca\u00edda de tensi\u00f3n en la resistencia de toma de tierra RE de la instalaci\u00f3n de puesta a tierra del edificio (Ver Figura). Si todas las partes conductoras el\u00e9ctricas, con las que las personas pueden entrar en contacto, se elevan al mismo potencial, no existe ninguna posibilidad de riesgo para la integridad f\u00edsica de las mismas. Por eso, es necesario realizar la compensaci\u00f3n de potencial de todos los elementos conductores existentes en el edificio o que accedan a \u00e9l.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.electropol.com.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/ElevacionDelPotencial.png\" alt=\"ElevacionDelPotencial\" \/><\/p>\n<p>La elevaci\u00f3n de potencial de la instalaci\u00f3n de toma de tierra a causa de la corriente de rayo supone tambi\u00e9n riesgos para las instalaciones el\u00e9ctricas (Ver Figura). En el ejemplo mostrado, la toma de tierra de servicio de la red de suministro de baja tensi\u00f3n se encuentra fuera del \u00e1rea de gradiente de potencial ocasionado por la corriente de rayo. De este modo, el potencial de la toma de tierra de servicio RB, en caso de descarga de rayo en el edificio, no es id\u00e9ntico al potencial de tierra de la instalaci\u00f3n de consumidores dentro del edificio. En el presente ejemplo la diferencia es de 1000 kV.
